In January 1997, President Clinton announced the Food Safety Initiative to improve the security of food supply in the United States. At the end of 1997 the “Initiative to Ensure the Safety of Imported and Domestic Fruits and Vegetables” was announced to have greater assurance that the fruits and vegetables for local consumption whether produced in the U.S or imported comply with the highest standards of food quality and safety. As part of this initiative, guidelines for Good Agricultural Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices were developed for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Due to the growing importance of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS) for the production and marketing of fresh fruits and vegetables, this webpage has been developed as a guide to help producers and exporters gain better knowledge of the steps toward producing safe and healthy products.  This page has been developed to be easy, user-friendly and in a logical manner so it can be consulted by both experienced and inexperienced producers.

This website contains specific topics, a general focus on Sanitary and Phitosanitary Measures (SPS),   as well as information to support the producer in the process of exporting his product inside and outside of the Central America region.

1Good Agricultural Practices and Good Manufacturing Practices provide guidelines to minimize physical, chemical and microbiological contamination in the production and packing of fresh produce.

MSF InfoMarket Access details the export procedures from different Central America countries as well as the import regulations to the United States, European Union, Canada and Mexico.

2SPS Links contains links of Government and Non Government Organizations with information related to Food Safety.

3Documents provide a list of Food Safety sources in PDF or HTML format for immediate access and consult.
